The US Senate is currently considering H.R. 1: One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), a budget reconciliation bill passed by the US House of Representatives to address President Trump’s tax cut agenda. This bill includes provisions that impact both the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medicaid.
According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, OBBBA will cause 7.6 million Americans to lose health coverage and add over $3 Trillion to the national debt over 10 years. In addition, the CBO indicates that work requirements are:
- unlikely to reduce federal spending
- unlikely to increase employment
- likely to lead to increased uninsured residents
- likely to cause significant administrative burden and costs to states
